Choose Files, Abrasives and Sanding Holders for Model Details

Compare the contact shape and working surface, then check whether the purchase is a file, prepared abrasive or bare holder requiring separately selected paper.

Choose the contact shape for the part

A broad flat face and a curved recess do not call for the same contact geometry. Tamiya 74104 supplies flat, half-round and round files in one starting set. The hard-coated74106 instead focuses on a 6 mm flat working face, while74126 supplies a 5 mm half-round form and 74107 a 3 mm round profile. Choose the form that can contact the intended area rather than treating width as a performance ranking.

The 74164 is different again: its tapered diamond section changes diameter along the working length. Tamiya names shaping holes and resizing pipes, including softer aluminum and brass. The 8 mm figure is the maximum diameter of the taper, not the diameter at every point or a drilling-capacity rating.

Keep working length separate from overall length

The 74164 gives unusually useful separate dimensions: 150 mm overall, 55 mm for the filing section, and 8 mm maximum working diameter. Compare the actual opening with the shape and working section if access is deep or restricted.

Other listed lengths have different scope. The 74104 figure of 140 mm is total file length; 74106 states 165 mm overall and 74107 states 160 mm overall. Those do not establish the length of the toothed section. Confirm the working section when reaching a recessed area is the reason for buying the tool.

Compare the surface without assigning an invented equivalent

Smooth double-cut teeth, chrome-coated file construction, diamond surfaces and a glass file are different working-surface descriptions. Tamiya 74164 supplies a #200 grade, but that does not give every other file in the department a comparable sanding number. Mudder supplies no numerical grit, and the CD-03 finish labels need confirmation if a specific abrasive sequence matters.

For photo-etched details, Tamiya 74066 is a dedicated half-circle diamond option. Mudder’s nine-file inventory specifies three each of round, flat and triangular forms; the title’s square profile remains unresolved. Its seller also warns that the files may remove a chunk from a plastic miniature, so consider that limitation for delicate plastic details. For the CD-03, the seller permits a water rinse or soft brush to remove dust; that is the cleaning instruction for this glass file, not a rule for every abrasive.

Check whether abrasive paper is supplied

DSPIAE’s CFB01-09 provides nine irregular carbon-fiber supports, with self-adhesive sandpaper expressly excluded. Choose those receiving shapes when selecting and fitting your own abrasive is useful. The grit-identification sticker is for organizing the holders; it does not turn the blanks into a supplied fixed-grit assortment.

The jojobasec Red Round holder instead retains paper with a clamping knob and also excludes sandpaper. Its approximate20.7 cm measurement is overall length, not the usable paper width or clamp range. Lasnten offers the prepared-abrasive alternative: 40 polishing sticks, 30 narrow twigs and60 double-sided slanted twigs, plus one rotating storage organizer. That is130 abrasive pieces and one organizer, rather than 131 sanding sticks.

Questions before choosing

When is a conical file worth comparing with a round file?

Consider the taper when an opening or tube needs a changing diameter. A 3 mm cylindrical profile such as74107 is a different contact shape.

Can overall tool length tell me how deep the file reaches?

No. Compare the actual working section and clearance. A long handle does not establish a long toothed area.

How can I compare a file’s cut pattern with an abrasive grit label?

Keep the descriptions separate: smooth double-cut teeth, diamond coating and a glass filing face do not come with a shared numerical conversion. Tamiya 74164 names #200 for that conical file, while Mudder supplies no numerical grit and CD-03’s finish labels need confirmation if an exact sequence matters.

Do the sanding holders include abrasive paper?

CFB01-09 and the selected Red Round holder both expressly exclude sandpaper. CFB uses separately selected self-adhesive paper; Red Round uses a mechanical clamp. Lasnten instead supplies prepared abrasive pieces with its storage organizer.
